A Study on the Status of Patient Teaching of Nursing Students


Abstract
To do the more effective nursing care, the author studied the status of patient teaching in clinical area on the availability of 240 students (Junior and Sophomores) in Holy Spirit Junior College of Nursing.
The Results obtained were summarized as follows.
1. The importance and practice condition of patient teaching: 56.6% of the respon-dents had heard the lecture for patient teaching, 51.6% of them practiced teaching patient during the Nursing care plan, 15.8% of them considered it to be important and Junior who practiced more patient teaching treated more important than sophomores.
2. The Nurse¢¥s concept of patient teaching: Nursing Students understand the patient teaching very well. But 31.3% of them practiced it which is planned and prepared, 85.8% of them are responsible for it, 90.6% of them considered it to be necessary to patients. There was a more tendency for task-centered nursing care rather than for patient-centered nursing.
3. Contents of patient teaching: It is necessary for Nursing students to be lectured continuously because 59.6% of them do not know about the content of teaching to dis-charged patients.
4. Time of patient teaching: Teaching can be accomplished even if there is no time
set aside specially for it. But generally proper time for patient teaching is in the midmorn-ing or mid afternoon since one and a half time of two hours required. Some of the respondents (51.5%) reported that it was when they met the patients in a consultation room the proper time. 48.8% respondents could do anytime when the patients required. 49.6% respondents met their patients in a mental and physical condition which learning is possible.
5. Prior preparation for patient teaching 7.5% respondents reported that they had good preparation for the teaching which they were doing, others (22.9%) reported adequate preparation and (68.3%) reported that their preparation for teaching was inadequate. If Nursing students have advance preparation for normal teaching and are aware of their objectives in teaching patients, they can do effective teaching.
6. As the methods of individual patients teaching, the majority of them used conversa-tion (93.3%).
7. Purposes of patient teaching: The purposes of patient teaching is to help the patient recover completely, but the majority of the respondents (68.7%) don¢¥t know this. So it is necessary for them to understand correctly the purpose of patient teaching and nursing care.
8. Condition of patient teaching: The majority of respondents (69.1%) had some trouble in teaching uncooperative and severe condition patient. The place for teaching is most often at the patient¢¥s bed side (96.3%).
9. Suggestion of patient teaching; 77.5% of the respondents feel the needs for knowledge¡¯s about patient teaching.
